Anyway, having lots of columns and also editing them individually on the fly is very useful. In the current open shell, two columns are separated by just a COLUMN BREAK, so there is actually only one column.
It would also be very useful if we could edit them on the fly, let's say we have a checkbox option in the context menu and when it is enabled, we can freely edit the items in the column and change their behavior and choose whether they are shortcuts to a folder/file or a sub-menu, change the background color for each column, change the font and font size/color for each column, change text/icon padding for each column separately, etc.
I know many of these things can be done in the skin, but for average users like me it is too time-consuming to create/edit a skin, whereas we can have these options in open-shell instead of skins, so we can customize the start menu more freely regardless of skins.
