VS Code agent (chat) window does not have access to Copilot CLI's configured MCP servers #3638

Description

Problem

MCP servers configured for the Copilot CLI (visible via /mcp) are not accessible from the VS Code agent/chat window. Running /mcp in the Copilot CLI shows my servers authenticated (e.g. linear, figma, plus the built-in github-mcp-server), but those same servers/tools are not available to the agent inside VS Code.

Impact

Without MCP access, the agent window / Copilot CLI integration is effectively unusable for my workflow, since the tools I rely on (Linear, Figma, etc.) can't be called.

What I'm trying to do

I want the MCP servers configured for Copilot CLI to be available in the VS Code agent window, but I can't find how to set that up.

Steps to reproduce

  1. Configure and authenticate MCP servers in Copilot CLI (/mcp shows them as ✓ authenticated).
  2. Open the agent/chat window in VS Code.
  3. MCP tools are not available there.

Expected

MCP servers configured for Copilot CLI should be usable from the VS Code agent window, or there should be clear documentation on how to configure this.

Environment

  • VS Code Copilot CLI integration
  • MCP servers: linear, figma (HTTP, OAuth authenticated), github-mcp-server (built-in)
